Chipman House, South Ridge Village, Middlebury, Vermont

Efficiency Award:

South Ridge is a new community just outside Middlebury, Vermont. Built to the highest ecological standards, all its buildings will be LEEDS certified. South Ridge also builds on Vermont's architectural traditions, using the proportions and details of nineteenth and early twentieth century construction.

The Chipman House was the first house to be built in South Ridge. Although it is just over 2,100 square feet (very compact for a four bedroom house!) it feels spacious due to very careful planning.

The Chipman House makes full use of its lot with three porches (one screened) and a patio. French doors maximize the connection between indoors and out.

All visitors, including the president of Middlebury College, have exclaimed how comfortable and successful the marriage of tradition and ecology can be.
