New Neighborhood, Montpelier, Vermont
The City of Montpelier purchased an old golf course in 2022, and last year invited developers to propose a new neighborhood for the city. This design is one of four proposals at concept phase. It features 300 affordable homes (defined as 0 – 150% of area median income), with over 250 able to be owned.
Most of the homes are in a pedestrian village which features small common greens and community buildings. The developer team is proposing district geothermal heat, a multi-modal system to reduce car ownership, a community farm, and critical community services like a farmstand, a mail room, a health clinic, a barbershop, exercise space, laundries, and a café.
For those families who prefer traditional homes with parking, there are cottage clusters and standalone homes.
The golf course has already been converted to soccer fields, a disc golf course, and ski/hiking trails. These would be kept and enhanced.
